Radio Telescope. Parkes

The Parkes Observatory hosts the 64-metre radio telescope, one of the telescopes comprising CSIRO’s Australia Telescope National Facility. An icon of Australian science, and made famous by the Australian film ‘The Dish’, the Parkes radio telescope has been in operation since 1961 and continues to be at the forefront of astronomical discovery. Astronomers from across Australia and around the world utilise the Parkes radio telescope to undertake world-class astronomical science.

The Roxy Hotel was originally The Roxy Theatre which was opened on 6 February, 1930. The theatre’s main entrance is surmounted by an impressive arch and an ornate Spanish Mission tower which was retained throughout reconstruction.

The theatre became part of the National Trust of Australia due to the building itself and the stylish historical setting. However, due to the importance of this magnificent monument in Australian history, there was an uproar when the Roxy Theatre shut it’s doors forever after 72 years.

Wellington Caves. Wellington

These caves offer a number of exciting filmmaking possibilities. The large cave is easily accessible via stairs and is supplied with 240V power. All caves are not open to public, although they are suitable for filming. The Adjoining caves are a disused phosphate mine with tunnels through hard rock and timbered shafts, which also has 240V power throughout and is a very good location. Old Government House, Parramatta.

Standing within 260 acres of Parramatta Park, Old Government House is Australia’s oldest public building.
The central block of the house was built in 1799 by Governor John Hunter, however the appearance of the house today is largely thanks to Governor and Mrs Macquarie. Their 1815 extensions, designed by Macquarie’s Aide, Lieutenant John Watts, transformed the house into an elegant Palladian style residence in the English manner.
The rooms are furnished with pieces from the National Trust’s collection of early colonial furniture; the largest collection in Australia. Surrounded by rolling lawns and gardens set on the banks of the Parramatta river.

The Turon River offers many excellent locations for drama and TVC’s. Good locations for 4WD river crossings to promote 4WD vehicles. Good vantage points along river, particularly from the Bridle Track which runs parallel to river between Sofala and Hill End.  Good spots for camping and some spectacular high shots of river in gorges as move closer towards Hill End.  Normally good flows in river even in severe drought. Timber Mine Poppet Head and Shaft. Hill End

Poppet head is a recreation similar to that used during gold mining era at Hill End late 19th C.  Mearby is purpose built mine shaft for tourism and filming purposes. Runs 130 metres into hillside. Timbered in the traditional way in parts and hard rock in other parts. Has power supply and power points throughout. Rail track and trolley available as props or for tracking shots. At end of shaft is series of timber ladders to surface. This ‘mine’ is an ideal  filming location. Being purpose built, it overcomes the OHS and Mining Act restrictions normally applying to current or disused mines. Located at Hill End, in the Bathurst LGA.

Macquarie River runs alongside Bridle Track for much of journey to Hill End from Bathurst. Excellent potential location for 4WD, adventure TVC’s. Good river crossings and areas to film vehicles on road (dirt) with river background. Located in the Bathurst LGA.

Hay Plains. Hay.

Town of Hay has many fine examples of colonial era public buildings architecture. Region is also known for very large shearing sheds, large scale crop production including cotton and very good examples of ‘outback’ style settings with long straight roads to the horizon.  The local river provides excellent locations for watersports and widlife.

Dubbo, home to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, is only an hour by air from Sydney, five to six hours by car, and seven hours by train. Weddin Mountains National Park. Grenfell.

This striking crescent of cliffs and ridged gullies is reputed to be a bushrangers’ haunt — Ben Halls cave is named for one of the area’s most infamous rogues. Any trip to Weddin Mountains National Park can’t help but include a scenic drive. On a clear day, the mountain can be seen rising above the landscape from over 50 km away. Watching it gradually loom ever closer is one of the real treats of a visit to the park.
The journey around the base of the mountain en route to the major visitor destinations such as Holy Camp or Ben Halls camping ground and picnic area is a striking feature ideally suited to both bicycle and car touring.

Located right alongside the internationally acclaimed Wellington Caves & Phosphate Mine, the Phosphate Mine is a completely restored underground mine. From the moment you put on a hard hat, you enter a new world at one of the State’s most intriguing tourist attractions. The mine not only features the workings of a World War 1 mine, but bone fragments and fossils from 300,000 years ago. Paleontologists from all over the world have been making pilgrimages to this cave since the 1930s and now you can too!

Duntryleague Golf Course is a championship 18 hole layout measuring 5,976 metres from the back markers with extensive plantings of European trees. Club house is outstanding example of grand Victorian era architecture. Located on Woodward Street, only minutes from the CBD of Orange and approximately 260 kilometres West of Sydney.

Blast furnace ruins, Lithgow

A monument to Lithgow’s industrial history. It was here that the first iron and the first steel in Australia were cast.
William Sandford established the blast furnace in 1886 and it continued production until 1928 when the entire industry was moved to Port Kembla.
The site has now been developed as a park around the remains of the pump house and the foundations of the furnace.

Binda Mill. Upper Lachlan.

Binda Mill is a fully restored 1850s stone cottage, currently operating as a B&B in the Upper Lachlan Shire

Bird Hide Swamp. Forbes.

The Gum Swamp is a nesting and breeding area and in drought conditions a refuge for the birds.  Even in the midst of a drought the swamp is near full capacity with bird-life just as prolific as in non-drought times. Always open, the Bird Hide is nestled on the edge of Gum Swamp wetland sanctuary.  From here you have wonderful viewing of the many species of birds (at least 158 species) and native fauna which use the area in the course of the year. Best viewing is at sunrise and sunset. The sanctuary located 4km south of Forbes is off the Newell Highway, turning right down a well sign-posted gravel road.

Japanese Gardens. Cowra.

Opened in 1979, the multi award-winning Cowra Japanese Garden is a “must see” at any time of the year. The Garden’s designer, Ken Nakajima, created the Kaiyushiki (strolling) Garden to symbolise the Japanese landscape. The rocky hillside, manicured hedges, waterfalls and streams, and the two lakes provide a serene environment for a myriad of birdlife. Special features of the Garden include a Bonsho Bell, a traditional Edo Cottage, an authentic open air Tea House and a Bonsai House.

Boorowa Hotel. Boorowa

The Boorowa Hotel is a beautiful heritage building with a fine old ornate balcony overlooking the street.
The hotel is located in the main street of Boorowa near to all the activity. The town centre has been rejuvenated with gorgeous red rose gardens, heritage lighting and seating and wide streets.

Blue Mountains Film Festival. Katoomba

The 2011 Blue Mountains Film Festival (formerly the Katoomba Short Film Festival) is now in its fourth year, and will be held at Scenic World, Katoomba on October 13, 14 and 15, set against the stunning backdrop of the Three Sisters and the Jameison Valley. Screenings will be held in the Scenic Cinema, wrapping up with an awards presentation on the final evening in the Skyway Restaurant. The festival is now open for submissions.

The National Motor Racing Museum’s mission is the conservation and preservation of material relevant to Australian motor racing history, and to enhance the understanding and significance of motorsport within Australia. There is a vast collection race vehicles in working order.

Mt. Panorama, Bathurst.

Today, Bathurst is synonymous with motorsport, being the site of the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit. It hosts the Bathurst 12 Hour motor race each February, the Bathurst Motor Festival every Easter, and the Bathurst 1000 motor race each October. During these times, the population swells with tourists. The circuit is a public road when not being used for racing and is a popular tourist attraction for visitors to the city. Bathurst has a long history of racing, beginning with motorcycle racing from 1911.[46] From 1931 to 1938, motorcycle racing was conducted at the Old Vale Circuit[47] before moving to the newly created Mount Panorama Circuit in 1938. On 16 April 1938, Mount Panorama attracted 20,000 spectators to its first race, The Australian Tourist Trophy and in 2006 the crowd figure reached 194,000 for the 3 day Bathurst 1000 event.

Bathurst Court House

The Courthouse (circa 1880) faces Russell Street and is Neo-Classical with an octagonal Renaissance dome.  It was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and is superbly situated in the heart of the city.
Bathurst’s most distinguished public building, it is regarded by the National Trust as ‘one of Australia’s finest examples of Victorian public architecture’.
